Genuine Student Requirement

Genuine Student Requirement

The Australian Government introduced the Genuine Student (GS) requirement for student visa applications submitted on or after March 23, 2024, replacing the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement.

Assessment Questions

  • Current Circumstances: Provide details of ties to family, community, employment, and economic situation.
  • Reason for Course Selection: Explain why the chosen course and education provider were selected and demonstrate understanding of course requirements and life in Australia.
  • Benefit of Course Completion: Describe how completing the course will benefit the applicant.
  • Additional Information: Include any other relevant details.

Supporting Documents

Applicants must attach supporting documents to their visa application. Generic statements without evidence are given less weight in the assessment.

Evidence to Include

Applicants are encouraged to provide evidence or information on:

Previous Study: Academic transcripts, qualifications, length of study, and certificates of attainment.

Previous Study in Australia: History of study, reasons for changes, progress details, and study gaps.

Current Employment: Employer details, period of employment, position held, and contact information for verification.

Circumstances in Home Country: Personal ties, economic circumstances, employment or business activities, and political or civil unrest.

Potential Situations in Australia: Knowledge of course and provider, research conducted, planned living arrangements, and financial stability.

Assessment Factors

The GS criterion considers the applicant's circumstances, immigration history, compliance with visa conditions, and other relevant factors. It acknowledges post-study pathways and evaluates the value of the course to the applicant's future.

Considerations

  • Home Country Situations: Reasons for not studying locally, personal ties, economic status, and political or civil unrest.
  • Potential Situations in Australia: Course relevance, employment prospects, and expected benefits.
  • Value of the Course: Alignment with current education level, relevance to future employment, and expected benefits.
  • Immigration History: Visa and travel history, previous applications, refusals, or cancellations.
  • Minors: Consideration of parental or guardian intentions.

The GS requirement aims to ensure that students genuinely intend to study in Australia and contribute positively to the country's society and economy.
